Low Back Pain

If you have low back pain, you should be thinking CHIROPRACTIC and apparently you are. Back pain is by far the #1 issue that patients present with to a chiropractor’s office. With thirty-eight years of experience, there are few chiropractors in the Wilmington area that have more experience treating back problems than Dr. Weckel.

We can separate back problems into two main categories: traumatic and non-traumatic. Typically, only about 15% of our new patients present where trauma was the causative event. It can be a simple as pulling a casserole out of the oven, a lifting strain or an injury from a motor vehicle accident.

The vast majority of my new patient’s problems are simply due to life; years of 40-hour work weeks with repetitive procedures, long hours of standing or sitting, numerous previous sports injuries, years of body abuse from work, ongoing stress, the development of scar tissue and adhesions, the presence of spinal arthritis and even being pregnant.

None of these conditions are fixed with pills and few require surgical intervention. All of the above situations lead to what is known as segmental spinal joint dysfunctioning, i.e. a subluxated spinal segment. This is where spinal segments (two vertebrae with a disc in-between) don’t move freely in all directions. When you attempt to do normal activities, areas of your spine don’t move properly, the spinal segments get irritated and inflamed which become painful and will eventually lead to accelerated degenerative changes (arthritis and disc degeneration). Chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT) is the art and science of detecting these subluxated areas and through gentle specific manipulative techniques, improve or correct the dysfunctioning segments. This in turn decreases pain, improves functioning, normalizes nerve functioning improving your overall health and allows you to function and enjoy life to it’s fullest.
