Every year almost 2.5 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents. Most people are familiar with the term “whiplash” injury which occurs when the neck is either quickly accelerated (rear-end collision) or decelerated (front-end collision) causing an over stretching of the neck muscles and supporting soft tissue structures. Of course, a major traumatic event can lead to serious injuries, broken bones and severe lacerations, cuts and bruising.
Chiropractors are specialists in treating soft tissue sprain/strain type injuries following an accident. Physicians do not speed up the healing process but we try to control the healing process so that your injuries heal in the best possible way with the least amount of disability or impairment. There are three phases of healing that are well documented in the scientific literature. Phase One is the acute inflammation phase. Typically, this is the first week after the injury. Ice, “protection”, gentle range of motion stretching and acute pain control occur in this phase. Phase Two is the repair phase where scar tissue is laid down along stress lines to the muscles and joints. Gentle and consistent chiropractic manipulation is critical here to get the best possible healing. The last phase is a remodeling and strengthening phase.
I am chiropractic certified in Spinal Trauma as well as being a Board Eligible Chiropractic Neurologist. That required over 400 post graduate hours of training and we have been successfully treating post-traumatic injuries for over 37 years now.
There doesn’t have to be a lot of outward visible physical property damage to a car in order for you to have a sprain/strain injury. I often hear stories of patients who had minor injuries years prior; they did not seek medical/chiropractic care and have “never been quite right “since.
Don’t be one of those patients. Our care is gentle and we work with your insurance carriers and even your attorney to see that you get the care you need.
